The Australian Beef Sustainability Framework 2018 Annual Update reports on the Consultative Committee meeting held in August 2017, industry stakeholders were asked which of the 23 priority areas in the Framework industry should focus on. It resulted in the identification of five key priority areas, with a sixth added by the SSG. These six key priority areas will focus industry and Framework activities to drive continuous improvement across the value chain.
Top of the list is animal husbandry techniques which include castration, horn removal (dehorning), branding, and ear marking. The industry aims to find alternatives to invasive practices (i.e. breeding selection for the polled gene) and where practicable administer pain relief before carrying out necessary husbandry procedures.
