Australian welfare example leads change overseas

Australia’s chief vet says the ESCAS system, designed to safeguard the welfare of Australian livestock sent for slaughter overseas, is “performing very well”.

Dr Mark Schipp says there have been improvements in welfare and transparency in receiving markets since ESCAS was implemented, and some countries within the South-East Asian region are now voluntarily adopting the system domestically as well.

Dr Schipp acknowledges that there are still tensions within some markets over elements of the ESCAS system and its implementation.

But he says Australia is also being commended overseas for its leading role in improving livestock welfare.   READ MORE
